Abstract

Introduction:In Ghana breastfeeding is generally practiced but the full benefits are not realized due to the high level of suboptimal breastfeeding practices.


Aim:The study aimed to gain in-depth understanding of family and cultural influences on first-time Ghanaian mothers lived experience of exclusive breastfeeding.


Method:A longitudinal qualitative design was adopted, underpinned by the hermeneutic phenomenological approach. The lived experiences of thirty first-time women purposefully recruited from antenatal clinic, was explored using a series of three semi-structured in-depth interviews.
